Market Business?

I am often asked how to have a market stall in Portugal, so here’s how…

  • First decide what you might like to sell that’s not going to break your back or bank balance
  • Then pop along to the tax office and register for a market stall, giving them an idea of what you will sell. If its foodie or skin-care type of things you will want to tell them, you are an occasional artisanal seller.
  • This way you fall into a grey-area where you are allowed to make these sorts of things in small batches to sell occasionally without so many of the very strict rules that usually apply.
  • Then you submit your earnings online every quarter to the tax office and also to social security (which you also need to go and register with separately to get a NISS number as well as the NIF you have from the tax office). You will pay the min of €20.00 monthly to social security no matter what you earn.
  • I recommend using an accountant (they do not cost much here and will save you pulling your hair out) to submit your tax return at the end of the tax year.
  • The market community is amazing, I just love how most people are super friendly and supportive of each other and always have each others backs!
  • Just be prepared to work ya-ass-off in all weathers, so make sure you are selling something you love and feel passionately about.
  • Oh and do buy a good gazebo too, in the intense summers you’ll be very grateful as well as the intense rains in the winter too.
  • Any questions just ask
