How my oxalate dumping is finally declining and here’s why…
It’s taken years to get the oxalate dumping down, but that’s no surprises considering the crazy amounts of oxalates my plant-based ‘superfood’ freak self was eating for the previous decades.
The dumping started intensely about 5 weeks after I went cold turkey (I don’t recommend this) from oxalates.
It happens on a cycle and my cycle to start with was every few days, then it went every few weeks and then has slowly got further apart, apart from when I’ve tried to rush it and cut them all out again, then it’s sped up again (so much so I ended up with kidney stones – Really ffffing OUCH).
To start with dairy and lemon juice helped (like they do for many people) but over time the first sped up the dumping (that can happen with many people) and the second fuelled the histamine issue the oxalates were also fuelling.
What was a gamechanger for me was adding back in no more than 150g of seasonal, local oxalates daily and taking high doses of citrates. Calcium or magnesium citrates are what is recommend for many, but again these sped up oxalate dumping more for me (I’m often a ‘special’ case with these things ha).
However, potassium citrate was a amazing, and made it so a barely noticed the dumping.
However, taking high strength potassium citrate for a prolonged period of time led to me to feeling like it was pushing my other minerals out of whack. But every time I tried to lower it the dumping would come back.
Then I found something that changed it all!
I decided to experiment (if you’ve been here for a while you’ll know I am a big fan of this – on myself) with Lugol’s Iodine. I suspected that I like a HUGE amount of the population might be deficient in this, especially as I have not really eaten any seafood or fish for sometime (due to the high histamines in them).
I started taking some Lugol’s (it MUST be Lugol’s and no other brand) daily, just a low dose to start with and I felt like there was a change almost right away (this could be a placebo though).
So, I continued and what I noticed next is I could easily lower my potassium citrate dosage without any increase in oxalate dumping and with move improvements in thyroid health to boot!
Of course, it could just be the oxalate dumping is done for now (but considering the huge amounts I’ve eaten for decades that’s highly unlikely).
What I suspect has happened is because iodine competes with oxalates for absorption and transportation that increasing my iodine uptake has reduced the oxalates binding abilities and increased their elimination (but in a gentler way).
It’s also thought that because Iodine supports the thyroid, it helps reduce the severity of oxalate dumping by reducing other forms of inflammation, supporting hormonal health and improvements in energy and general resources needed in supporting dumping.
I plan to keep on taking Iodine (which I have upped over time) and see if I can reduce the supplemental supports, I take for the oxalate dumping and histamine flares completely.
I do not believe any of us need supplements, but often they are helpful until we get to and heal the root cause of what’s going on!
Any questions at all just ask and remember I have an oxalate highlight on my profile.
