Peter Pan Syndrome is a term I’ve been using recently to remind myself and others of the fun, beautiful, simple, childlike things in life. That it’s so important to search them out, be open to them, enjoy them and embrace the child inside of us all the marvels in the magic of the world.
I did not realise until just now it’s an actual term (see the bottom of this post for what the internet says this means) and sadly it suggests there is something wrong with us if we want to hold on to this childlikeness.
For me this is a clear example of why so many of us spend so many years unhappy and unhealthy because society wants us all to be good little robots rather than living, breathing, beings counting blessings and beauty in the world.
Yes we need to make the money, have a job and pay the bills to one degree or another. But, why should this be at the expense of a life full of wonder and joy.
I’m encouraging clients all the time now to embrace their inner Peter Pan and allow themselves to be filled up with heart shaped stones, clouds that look like chickens, the smell of blossom in the air, the crunch of leaves under foot and the blessing of waking to another day.
Life is pretty hard and intense for many right now and feels full of pressure, overwhelm, ill health and loss, but when we allow ourselves to Peter Pan, we allow ourselves time to feel life! To heal, grow, let go and marvel and the magic around.
Somewhere a long the line we learnt to let go of our inner Peter Pan and behave like the adults we think society wants us to behave like. Well I’m kinda done with that, so who’s with me? You coming to Never Never Land???
What the internet says Peter Pan Syndrome is: A pop psychology term used to describe an adult who is socially immature. It refers to “never-growing” adults who have reached an adult age, but cannot face their adult sensations and responsibilities.
