What to Prep?
When all the C@vid craziness happened, I was one of the people prepping. You never knew when another lockdown would happen or what craziness they’d come up with next so it made sense to be very prepared just in case.
Over the last few years, I’ve been a little more lax about it. I’ve still got some supplies, I have done a lot of canning, drying, preserving and saved a lot of seeds and not relied to much on the World out there for too much. However it’s not how it was and the blackouts across much of Europe last week have reinforced the need to be prepared for anything these days.
So here is what I think is important to prep, in case of some other World craziness…
- Water
- Water filtration system (and back up filters)
- Tools (esp tools that don’t need fuel/power to work), esp axe, shovel, wrench and crowbar
- Work gloves, duct tap, zip ties, rope, knives (pens knives too)
- Tarps
- Seeds (& a cool, dry, insect/mice free way to store them)
- Dried foods (& a cool, dry, insect/mice free way to store them)
- Ways to store harvested food (veg, fruit, meat, dairy, herbs, etc) long term (dehydrator, freeze-drier, canner etc) plenty of glass jars and a cool, dark , insect & rodent free place to store it all
- Animals (not necessary for food, but to keep land clear and create fertilizer etc), but if you do have chickens or sheep or goats then you have an almost endless supply of eggs & dairy
- Animal feed (&/or seed to grow their food)
- Natural medicines (homeopathic / herbal remedies)
- First aid kit (scissors, bandages, iodine etc)
- Foraging books/resources
- Books (older one’s not written by AI) about any kind of land, maintenance, natural medicines, animal skills, food preservation and off-grid skills
- Fuel (diesel, firewood, gar bottles, back up ideas for solar or mains power)
- Power bank(s)
- Batteries
- CB Radio(s)
- Rechargeable headtorches
- Ways to light fires (matches, lighters, flints etc)
- Candles
- Generator (preferably diesel as the fuel stores a lot longer for these)
- Cash (during the blackouts the other day hardly anyone was taking card payments as their machines were not working)
- Bug-out-bag for each person (a bag full of essentials) that you can leave with quickly at any time. This might include first aid kits, natural medicines, some basics tools, power bank, CB radio, torch, water filtering system, sleep bag & tarp or something similar for shelter
- Skills (collect as many as possible)
- A big scary dog or two!
