Plant based to animal based…
I have more and more people contacting me all the time that have or are considering moving from plant based to animal based because of serious health conditions.
I know this is a REALLY hard decision for people to make when they have been plant based for decades, like me. I struggled so much with this. Even though I literally thought I might be dying a few years back I still found it incredibly hard to put my health above that of other animals. Everything I read suggested all my health conditions could be cured by changing to animal based yet for many months I went round and around in circles, stressing myself out about it. In the end as my health kept getting worse and nothing else was working, I decided to eat the most nutrient dense parts of the animals if I was going to do this, so I went straight in and ate organ meats. For weeks I gave myself headaches and stomach upsets from the guilt and shame I felt about that and then I realised that if I did not change my attitude about this then the animals were dying for nothing. So, I learnt to make peace with it, to source happy, healthy meats where possible and to use every single inch of the animal that had given its life for me to heal. And it worked, the headaches and stomach upsets went and over the months (and now years) my health not only returned but I started to slowly feel better than I ever had before.
I share this to help anyone that feels they may need to go back to animal-based eating for their health but is struggling with the idea of it.
Here’s some tips that helped me with the transition after 30 plus years of plant based…
- Work on your guilt about it, don’t let it fester otherwise the effect it has on your nervous system will mean you absorb very little, and the animal dies for nothing.
- Remember an animal is not dying every time you eat. One cow for instance (if you eat nose to tail) will feed a family for 18mths.
- Eggs are an amazing and fairly easy protein for many, they are packed full of nutrients and ca be eaten daily and in large qualities without much problem for most people.
- Oily fish, even from a can (make sure they are in water or olive oil though) is a great way to get a lot of animal based goodness in and maybe this is your line for now and you stay here. And that’s fine, just increase your oily fish intake as and when you can to include something daily and then something with most meals.
- Consider organ meats twice a week maybe to start with, they are cheaper, more nutrient dense and if you don’t want to eat much animal produce then this gives you more bang-for-buck.
- Bone broths (not stocks) and tallow and lard are a great way to transition to more animal based produce as they can be used as a base for many other meals, are super nutrient dense and are using waste produce up, so in my mind that makes it quite a sustainable item for taking some first steps in this directions.
- If you switch plant based to lots of dairy instead etc it’s likely you won’t do very well. Most people (until they are healed) don’t tolerate dairy very well, unless it’s raw or fermented.
- If you don’t focus on having plenty of animal fats and not just protein you’ll likely struggle with the change more and also become constipated, fat is super important.
- If you find the idea of the transition difficult then focusing on animal fats first might be easier for you. You will still get A LOT of benefits without actually eating a part of an animal. Maybe consider cooking meals with butter, ghee, tallow or lard for a while first.
- If you are eating a lot of junk food and are thinking eating animal based again will fix everything it won’t, you need to stop the junk food no matter if you are plant of animal based.
- Eating loads of meat and loads of carbs/sugars also is going to prevent you from becoming a fat-burner again (our natural way of being), so if you want to maximise your dietary changes then focus on animal based plus seasonal fruits & vegetables.
- If you are using lots of toxins on your skin and in your home, you’ll have limited results with any dietary/lifestyle changes (no matter what these are).
- If you have been a complete health freak (like me ha) about being plant based, ie: eating lots of sweet potatoes, nuts, seeds, fake flours, fake milks, fake butter, juices and smoothies then I recommend you don’t go right in full carnivore as you’ll likely be hit with some really intense oxalate dumping symptoms from the oxalate poisoning you probably have. Take the transition slow!
- If you are eating fake foods (no matter if plant based or animal based) you’ll have very limited results with any dietary or lifestyle changes.
- Remember intensive farming of anything, no matter if that’s soya, lettuce or beef is not good for us or the planet.
- Most of what we have been told about meat being bad for us and the environment is complete nonsense made up by the Bill Gates of the World so that they can feed us lab made ‘meats’ & insects, buy up all the farmland cheap and make us weaker, more compliant and in need of more of their pharmaceuticals and jabs. For instance, animals are the only way to regenerate the topsoil we are losing at a dramatic rate every year!
- This is our natural way to eat and thus the easiest way for our body to thrive.
- If you want to make the most of a difficult change like this, one where no animals life goes to waste then I highly recommend you change your lifestyle as a whole, prioritise sleep, light, earthing, your nervous system, hydration, minerals, environment and reduce your toxic exposure (of cosmetics, cleaner and such like).
- I highly recommend reading Lierre Keiths book The Vegetarian Myth. She’s an ex-vegan and a massive environmentalist who explains the realities of vegan/veggie diets on us and the planet. It’s so beautifully written and she cares very passionately about the planet but explains why most of what we have been told is untrue. I also have an interview with her on my YouTube channel HERE.
Is this something you find yourself struggling with? From the people I am speaking with it seems to be mostly people with auto-immune conditions, fertility/terrible PMS/early &or bad menopause issues, anxiety/depression &/or chronic fatigue and thyroid or heart conditions, that are now thinking they may need to change from plant based and are just not sure how to do this. The good thing is though that EVERY single one of them is seriously improving their health when they do.
I know it’s a really horrible decision to make as it’s not just about food, but your moral compass, ethics, lives and so much more, so if you are struggling and want to talk to someone that understands please reach out.
