My Low Oxalate Journey…

Many years ago, when I was still veggie/vegan/raw-vegan I came across this odd thing called oxalates.  Some people were claiming that chemicals (oxalates) in plants were killing us.  Being very narrow-minded with my diet/health journey at the time I wrote this crazy idea off and did not think any more of it (silly me)!

Then, last year I came across an interview (HERE) between Dr Antony Chaffee and Sally Norton where they were talking about this very same thing.  I then realised that I was probably consuming something like 200x the recommended maximum number of oxalates per day and had been for most of my life.  When you are veggie/vegan it’s highly likely that most of your food sources are high oxalate and although 3+yrs ago I started eating animal proteins again I was still consuming high amounts of sweet potatoes, beets, spinach, seeds and nuts (etc) as I believed these still to be healthy foods for human consumption.  And to make matters worse yet I was juicing and smoothie-ing many of them (making the oxalate issue even worse).

Straight away I ordered Sally’s book Toxic SuperFoods and her Data Companion (an accurate list of oxalates levels in our foods – unlike most lists online).  Within a week of strictly cutting out all the very high oxalates from my diet I noticed my energy went through the roof (I was physically very active anyway, but this was next-level stuff).  I also needed a lot less sleep and my brain felt switched on (even though I had not noticed it was not before ha). These benefits and more continued to improve over the weeks.

Since then, I have been suggesting to clients and friends to experiment with cutting out the high-offending oxalate rich foods and they have been getting amazing results.  More energy, less brain fog, better sleep, less muscle aches and pain, digestive issues clearing up, auto-immune issues improving and so many more random things improving.

No matter if you believe we should be eating carnivore, keto, veggie, vegan or raw-vegan, if you are struggling with your health in any way or just want a little extra energy it’s totally worth experimenting for at least 4 weeks with cutting out the high oxalate foods and see how you feel.  I would be extremely surprised if you did not notice a difference in that time.

We just would not have eaten high oxalate foods day in and day out and thus many people have issues with them and can benefit from cutting them out.
