The Reality of Off-Grid Living…
- Finding it weird when there are ‘normal’ toilets to use.
- Finding yourself more often than you’d think crawling about in animal muck one way or another.
- Having your day hijacked by some animal disaster/ escapee / random animal turning up on the land (so far, random chickens, goat, cats, kittens, dogs, puppies, and now today another kitten).
- Prioritising life in this order… animals, water, solar system, garden, eating and then anything else.
- Realising you’ll never really know what your day will bring.
- Being up for preserving huge amounts of fruit or veg at the drop of a hat.
- Lots of weeding, watering & strimming.
- Finding new (and hopefully) cunning ways to use up waste of any kind.
- Being willing to fix stuff with whatever you have at a drop of a hat.
- Working with the elements, the weather decides a lot what happens in each day… not you!
- Working seasonally, your days and weeks are based around whats happening in that season, not what you want to do.
- Growing more and spending less.
- Working together as community with common goals.
- Generally being quite smelly and looking like you have been dragged through a bush backwards most of the time.
- Feeling alive!
When you get moments see photo above, new beings being born! You realise this is how life is meant to be lived. We don’t need more stuff and achievements to feel alive, we need to step back into more traditional ways of existing. Following the seasons, the animals and the simple things in life (like food, water and shelter). The rest just isn’t that important… and wont last!
