Reasons why your fatigue might feel like it’s getting worse…
I am frequently contacted by people sacred their chronic fatigue syndrome (or any kind of fatigue) is getting worse and that they don’t know what to do about it (as they have usually tried everything already). Our worry about it worsening is the fuel for it actually worsening as it triggers the nervous system. However, if we remember a few simple things then we don’t fuel the very thing we don’t want. So, here are those things…
- If you have done a lot & are feeling worse then remember that’s normal, you are unfit & will feel it after you do more than normal (like anyone else does), you ARE NOT getting worse!
- Have you been prioritising sleep or staying up late watching/researching things. If you don’t sleep well, you’ll feel it worse! Set an alarm to get ready for bed earlier and earlier every night (slowly correcting to a healthier sleep time.
- Are you looking at screens a lot? This will dysregulate every system of the body, including your sleep, mood, digestive system, hormones and more. Use clear or yellow, blue light blocking glasses during the day and orange or red in the evenings and stop looking at screens an hour or two before bed (and never ever during the night).
- Are you ignoring your natural cycles and the cycles and seasons of life? If you are pushing against your period, menopause, full moons, seasonal changes etc you’ll feel worse because you are pushing against nature. When we go with the flow of nature, we naturally feel better.
- Are you eating locally and seasonally, or listening to others and buying in superfoods and supplements from all over the World not ‘designed’ for your microbiome? This simple switch to local and seasonal can make a big difference to health.
- Are you prioritising your nervous system? Or thinking you can keep on pushing through and ignore it’s whispers for safety and soothing.
- Are you blaming your body for being broken? When in fact it’s been doing a great job at trying to protect you from yourself &/or the World out there!?
- Are you nature deficient? Not connecting to nature through water, air, light, food & earth daily has a huge impact on overall health and this simple shift can regulate many systems of the body we thought were broken.
- Are you trying to control every situation? Are they all really more important than your health? Learning to let go of control &/or the need to be right/heard/valued frees up so many more resources for health.
- Are you trying to prove yourself to yourself or others? Letting go of this also frees up so many resources for health.
- Are you skipping meals, eating meals with a lot of carbs and sugars in or having caffeine, chocolate etc regularly? This will give you short term energy and long-term dips and cravings for more similar foods again. Eating regularly and eating fats and proteins and seasonal veg gives you slow releasing fuel that last a long time and helps your body repair.
Yes, there are many complicated and chronic reasons for worsening fatigue, but there are many simple swaps we can make that have a big impact on fatigue, but also overall health too.
