In 2017 I started building a life that work for me, not me working for it!
I used to live in a big expensive house and city in Scotland and when my marriage broke up the previous year, I decided that rather than working just to continue living there I was going to create a more natural life for myself.
So, I sold everything I owned (that had taken me decades to collect) apart from 6 boxes of my past (which went into my Dad’s attic) and whatever else I could fit into a small transit van converted into a campervan.
My dog and I ‘set sail’ (or whatever the campervan equivalent is) with a grand idea of taking a couple of years to travel overland to Vietnam, where I would set up a retreat centre. We got as far as Portugal!
As well as being much closer to the UK and my family, there was something free, rustic, traditional and more natural about central rural Portugal than I had experienced on any of my previous travels and that really caught my attention.
So, I traded the hustle and bustle of Edinburgh for the peace, slowness, real, simple, connected life of rural Portugal.
It’s been some of the hardest times of my life but also easily some of the most beautiful too.
I have lost and found myself many times over and I am sooo grateful for each and every moment of it as I’ve finally stopped searching for something to make me happy and found myself living a in tune with nature around and within me instead.
I had no idea how much living more connected to nature and community would change me. After 30 years of being plant-based I realised that this was killing me and also the animals and earth I cared so much about.
I trained in and researched regenerative farming practices and how this heals us, our soil, farm animals, wild animals and this beautiful planet. And I started a small regenerative farm, where I teach others how we can live in a more ancestral way to support our health, the health of our community and earth.
It’s been the most amazing journey and I am so deeply grateful for every part of it.
I live on the edge of a small village in central rural Portugal with sheep, chickens, ducks, geese and quails and life could not be more perfect. You could have this too, it’s not outside of reach and much easier than you think!
If you too would like to know more about regenerative farming practices then you can check out our Instagram page HERE or sign-up to our free 14 part off-grid course HERE. I also offer onsite farm consultations to assist you on your regenerative way.
We really can save this planet if we give more back than we keeping taking and regenerative farming is how we do this!
